Without Throwing Out Your Back

There comes a day every March when the sun shines through the window just right — and suddenly you can see everything.

Dust. Smudges. That mysterious corner cobweb that’s been there since Thanksgiving. The Grandkids fingerprints.

Spring cleaning sounds so cheerful, doesn’t it? Until you’re halfway up a step stool, wondering why you thought you were still 35.

Here’s your friendly reminder: spring cleaning should freshen your home — not send you to physical therapy.

Pace Yourself (You’re Not on a Game Show)

You don’t win a prize for cleaning the entire house in one day. Break tasks into small sections. One room. One closet. One cabinet.

Set a timer for 20–30 minutes, then take a break. Drink plenty of water. Admire your progress. Feel accomplished.  (See signs of dehydration.)

Lift Smarter, Not Harder

If you can’t remember the last time you lifted a heavy box, today is not the day to start.

  • Slide items instead of lifting if they aren’t too heavy. You don’t want to throw out your back!
  • Ask for help with heavy furniture.
  • Keep frequently used items at waist height. See our blog for easy labeling ideas

There’s no medal for heroics — but there is great peace in staying injury-free.

Watch the Step Stools

If you’re climbing up to clean ceiling fans, for example, make sure:

  • The stool is stable.
  • You’re wearing non-slip shoes.
  • Someone knows you’re doing it.
  • If you need to, have someone with you to steady the step stool while you are on it.
  • Or keep the ceiling fans on, you’ll never notice the dust! My personal best advice ever!

Falls are one of the most common injuries for older adults — and most are preventable with simple precautions.  Check out the 2 Step Stool with Handle on Amazon for safe step stool ideas.

Make It a Refresh, not a Marathon

Spring cleaning can also mean:

  • Replacing worn rugs (less tripping risk)-consider replacing them with non-slip rugs
  • Clearing pathways
  • Updating light bulbs to brighter ones
  • Opening windows for fresh air

Sometimes a small refresh makes your home feel brand new.

And if some projects seem bigger than they used to be? It’s completely fine to seek help — from family, neighbors, or trusted community resources. There’s wisdom in understanding your limits.

New season. Clean air. New outlook.

( Maybe skip the ladder gymnastics this year)
