Beginner Garden Guide

Every spring, I tell myself the same thing.

This year, I plan to keep the garden simple.

And every year, I somehow end up planting enough vegetables to feed a small village.

The truth is that gardening doesn’t have to be complicated to be rewarding. Some plants are wonderfully forgiving, grow quickly, and practically take care of themselves once they get started.

If you’re new to gardening—or simply want to enjoy your garden without spending every afternoon pulling weeds—these ten easy plants are a great place to start.

  1. Tomatoes

Tomatoes are one of the most popular vegetables for home gardens, and for good reason—they grow easily and produce a lot of fruit.

Cherry and grape tomatoes are especially beginner-friendly because they grow quickly and are less prone to problems than larger varieties.

*Helpful tips:

  • Plant in full sun
  • Use a tomato cage or stake
  • Water consistently

According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, tomatoes thrive in warm soil and need at least 6–8 hours of sunlight daily.

  1. Zucchini

If there were an award for “Most Generous Garden Plant,” zucchini would win every year.

One or two plants can produce more squash than most households can eat, which is why gardeners often share extras with neighbors.

*Helpful tips:

  • Plant after the last frost
  • Give plants plenty of space
  • Harvest when zucchini are about 6–8 inches long

Check out these recipes for the many uses of zucchini.

  1. Basil

Basil is one of the easiest herbs to grow and adds wonderful flavor to salads, sauces, and sandwiches.

It grows quickly and can thrive in both gardens and containers.

*Helpful tips:

  • Plant in warm weather
  • Pinch leaves often to encourage growth
  • Water regularly

  1. Lettuce

Lettuce is perfect for beginner gardeners because it grows quickly and doesn’t require much space.

You can harvest outer leaves as they grow, allowing the plant to keep producing.

*Helpful tips:

  • Plant in cooler spring temperatures
  • Provide partial shade in warmer climates
  • Keep soil moist
  1. Marigolds

Marigolds are cheerful flowers that are incredibly easy to grow.

Even better, they help deter certain garden pests and attract pollinators..

*Helpful tips:

  • Plant in full sun
  • Water moderately
  • Remove faded blooms to encourage new flowers
  • Plant around your garden spot if there is space available. Rabbits and deer do not like marigolds

The Farmer’s Almanac explains how marigolds benefit vegetable gardens.

  1. Radishes

Radishes are one of the fastest-growing vegetables you can plant.

Some varieties are ready to harvest in as little as three to four weeks.

*Helpful tips:

  • Plant in early spring
  • Sow seeds directly in the soil
  • Harvest promptly for the best flavor-the larger the radish, the stronger the flavor (this might not be for everyone’s palate)
  1. Green Beans

Green beans are productive plants that grow well in most gardens.

Both bush beans and pole beans are relatively low-maintenance.

*Helpful tips:

  • Plant after the danger of frost
  • Water regularly
  • Pick beans often to encourage more growth

  1. Mint

Mint is incredibly hardy—so hardy, in fact, that many gardeners prefer growing it in containers to keep it from spreading.

It’s perfect for teas, desserts, and summer drinks.

*Helpful tips:

  • Grow in containers
  • Harvest regularly
  • Provide partial sun

*Helpful tips:

  • Plant in warm soil
  • Provide full sunlight
  • Support plants as they grow
  1. Sunflowers

Sunflowers are one of the most joyful plants you can grow.

They grow quickly, attract pollinators, and add height and color to any garden.

*Helpful tips:

  • Plant in full sun
  • Give them room to grow
  • Protect seedlings from birds

Gardening Doesn’t Have to Be Complicated

The secret to enjoying your garden isn’t planting more—it’s planting wisely.

A few reliable plants can provide fresh vegetables, beautiful flowers, and a wonderful sense of accomplishment.

And here’s something I’ve learned over the years:

Gardening isn’t about perfection.

It’s about stepping outside, getting a little dirt on your hands, and watching something grow.

Even if it’s just one pot of basil on the porch.
