We Didn’t Hide
The time I recall
When the rain would fall
We didn’t run inside
To hide
As the sudden cool wind
That came rushing in
On a hot summer day
Testified
Dark clouds appeared
A sweet, subtle scent
The leaves on the trees
Hung down
We splashed in the puddles
The stream by the curb
Where the heat of the day
Was drowned
Mom brought out towels
We were soaked to the skin
A maelstrom swirled
round the drain
I still find that mirth
In the smell of wet earth
Of when we didn’t hide
From the rain
